In his wardrobe, he was the apogee of Prince Charming.
All those mad mixes of checks and plaids, breathtakingly audacious when he strode on to the golf course in a fanciful Fair Isle sweater over ultra-baggy (hello rappers!) plus fours.
“Plus twenties with vivid azure socks”, said lady Diana Cooper, when she first saw the royal sporting garb in the 30s. Although the prince could also be faultlessy correct in his riding jacket, curved to his body over classic jodhpurs and spurred booth.
Then there are his generous contributions to fashion: the dinner jacket, born from the american band leader’s tuxedo, and worn by HRH in the blue colour of a night sky, with black gros-grain lapels, and maybe the starry twinkle on his backless waistcoat of the dress buttons he collected.
“Chic Fatigué”, said Diana Vreeland, that mistress of the bon mot, as she tried to capture for American Vogue the essence of the Duke’s studied casualness. I like to think of him as naturally stylish, with an unerring flair fot what to wear and how to wear it, while Wallis tried so very hard to be sharp and chic and best dressed.

How do you find a style icon who isn’t a worn-out cliché?
Cary Grant, Fred Astaire or Colin Tennant , all obvious choices, all deceased. Even more difficult is selecting a style icon who is also a modern gentleman. Whilst there are many stylish men today, most of them qualify more as cool dudes than gentlemen. Contrary to popular opinion, slapping a tie and a suit on a man doesnt’t make him a gentleman.
Being a gentleman does imply a certain amount of sartorial attention, but that is only one facet of a man’s overall comportment and how he interacts with the world at large.
